Things to know about AP codes
- Since February 2019 Andhra Pradesh issues one state code (AP-39) for every district; AP-40 followed in 2023. District codes are no longer issued but old plates stay valid.
- Before 2014 the AP series also covered the Telangana districts (Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Warangal etc.); those moved to TS (now TG) after bifurcation, so their old AP numbers are not live AP offices.
- Within AP-39 the letter series marks the vehicle class: P state police, Z APSRTC, T to Y transport vehicles.
- Codes no longer issued for new vehicles: AP 02, AP 03, AP 04, AP 05, AP 07, AP 16, AP 18, AP 21, AP 26, AP 27, AP 30, AP 31, AP 35, AP 37. Old plates with these codes stay valid.
